OpenArena Unofficial
« on: May 19, 2010, 22:25:34 PM »
Hello world :)

a_clown and i talked a bit about oa and we decided to start a development project. At the beginning a_clown will implement a number of patches which he has coded already. Most of these patches are related to improved teamplay functions. At the moment it is a mod based on oa0.8.5 but we aim for a standalone version.

Any help is appreciated. We have a channel on quakenet: #oaUnofficial

Edit: The evil forum now has a subforum for oaUnofficial (http://www.evilarena.de/forum/)

The "homepage" of the project is here: http://oaunofficial.googlecode.com/
The most recent version can be downloaded here: http://code.google.com/p/oaunofficial/downloads/list

Best regards,
perry

oas aim is to make a free q3 - what are your aims?

Ehm, no!
Leilol wanna make an anime based game, very different from Q3! Thats why things started to change in the last version. Lower jumps, etc.. (s)he doesnt care about the multiplayer part, she/he watherever told several times, leilol wont appear on any server.

And as i read, it'll be a game, what has stuff that improves the 'progaming' part of the game. (Best of QL and OA = OAU :D)

I never said it will be shit! :D Just a fact, that oa wont be similar to Q3 at the end. And OA is to make a better free Q3! :)

Yap. Good luck with this project. I look very forward seeing it out!

Unfortunately I can't help with the project. I'm only capable of doing maps, but that's for UED... not so experienced with radiant or whatever that editor was called  ???

therefor a few briefly tutorials for radient could be usefull, allthough there are already enough good mapping tutorials for q3 out there.

PS: i dont think mapping for oa is harder then for UT, so try it and make better maps for the game you love :-). But if you dont want to map, ideas for maps are also great, handpainted sketches as well

So I'm finally in the loop and downloaded the most recent revision of OAU.

I put it in my baseoa folder... but so far I don't notice much difference.  The fonts are different in the menus, but otherwise?  What should I be looking for?  I would be happy to contribute ideas, but I guess I'm still not sure what "it" is....

Have fun testing it

I know this is maybe a totally LOW priority issue for oaU, but...

Anyone considering revamping the bot behavior?  Playing live is of course the best, but I travel often and don't always have the best connection for gameplay and like to train with the bots.  I'm not some amazing player, but I can win most maps me(1)vs 3 nightmare bots.  They can aim, but otherwise their movement is painfully predictable.  They don't follow me when I have the flag, they mostly ignore power ups and other special items, etc.  If I knew how I would tinker with it myself.  It could be cool to have bots that could strafe jump, for example, or had some more complicated behavior to make training with them a bit more useful...

hm...when I connect to the servers nothing gets downloaded.  yes, autoDL is on.  Not sure what I'm looking for.  Maybe I already have it?  Don't forget, I'm a noob when it comes to this programming stuff...

about the bots:  i found a few days ago this thesis http://www.cs.rochester.edu/~brown/242/docs/QuakeIII.pdf  , didnt read it yet, but perhabs this can help to improve the behaviour of the bots

Edit: if anyone had mentioned earlier to me that you can 'study quake 3', well, i think i wont study physics right now :D

Has everyone forgot about the (great) BrainWorks project ?

Quote
As far as the AI for PMX goes, the plan is similar to BrainWorks: they want a solid AI groundwork for Quake 3 that other mods can easily build off of.

http://brainworks-ai.blogspot.com/

And in plus, that's totally opensource !

---------------------------------------

About your project, that's a very cool initiative, but why not implement it in the OA official branch ? Anyway you can always switch back in the future.

And another thing : as I could see, the project is mainly focused on brightskins and visual signaletic for pro gamers. That's cool, but I don't think that's what will make OA more pro. There are many competitive features that are indeed missing, but most are functional, not graphics.

For the moment, the nearest approach to a pro environment in OA that I found is with Excessive Plus, but even in it there are missing things (but they are working on it actively). Maybe we can discuss about that, since I configure the servers for the current league, and I badly customized CPMA, I know some big pitfalls of the current game.
